Windsor Chairs

We are pleased to offer a new addition to our catalogue of fine furnishings: Windsor chairs. (Click here for more history on Windsor Chairs.) These are high quality, hand made chairs offered in a variety of historically accurate styles. These are works of art and will give you years, decades of trouble free service. In my years of furniture restoration I have not had a traditionally made Windsor chair in my shop in seven years as a result of just falling apart or coming unglued as is common with joined chairs. The exception is the chair brought to me three years ago where Mr. Customer used the rung of Mrs. Customer's chair as a step stool.

The unique construction of the chair contributes to a strength belying its delicate construction. The legs are arranged in a truncated pyramid arrangement and pre-stressed with the stretchers. Consequently there is no allowance for back and forth movement and the more they are used the tighter they get because of the unique tapered mortise in the seat where the leg attaches. Other joints are through mortised and wedged for flexibility without sacrificing strength.

Our chairs are offered in traditional Windsor finishes. Black or dark Windsor Green paint were historically the most popular but other authentic colors in reds, greens, yellows and browns are available. You have the option of using the seat of your pants with years of loving use to create an antique look or we can provide an ersatz distressed look for you at no extra charge.
