Hepplewhite Bookcases
(Previous | Next)

In the 18th Century books were prized and valuable possessions. The open bookshelf familiar in catalogs and rec. rooms would have been deemed unworthy in a home of substance. Bookcases usually were built with cabinets below, sometimes with drawers below and occasionally with desk arrangement, like writing surface and pidgin holes, below. The latter were larger than the familiar desk and secretary and were more fixtures than furniture. As tastes evolved many antique bookcases have found new lives as formal china closets.
