About Finishes

The Birnam Wood Joinery can provide three types of finish for your purchase. The first is paint. We use Old-fashioned Milk Paint brand milk paint for our painted finishes. The sixteen shades of reds, golds, greens and blues are intermixable so a custom color can be found to suit your taste if primary color is not satisfactory.

The second is stained wood. The colors seen in the catalog are the most commonly used but are no means the only alternatives available. For my money nothing beats the richness of cherry. You can either clear coat it and let nature take its course, as it will darken and mature with time, or accelerate the process with a reddish or brownish stain. Poplar and straight maple, as explained above, will take on any look, and curly maple looks best in the colors seen in the pieces already identified. This does not mean that other colors or shades are not available. If you need to match a decor or another piece we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

The third finish alternative is the artificially antiqued look as seen in the Shaker three drawer blanket chest. This look is achieved by layering paint and stain. "Wear" patterns are applied to achieve an antique look.
